Daniel A. Gruber, Ph.D.

Dan Gruber is the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning and Clinical Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University.

Dan began his appointment on July 1, 2019, and provides leadership for the ongoing improvement and enhancement of faculty teaching and student learning innovation throughout the W. P. Carey School’s curricula.

Dan chairs the W. P. Carey School of Business Council of Teaching Leads, which includes faculty from each of the eight academic units and serves on the Administrative Council for the School with the Dean, fellow Associate Deans, Academic Chairs, and other Senior Leaders.

Dan served on the W. P. Carey Dean Search Committee in 2021 and was a member of the steering committee for the W. P. Carey strategic planning process in 2022. He is currently a co-lead of the school's strategic initiative for Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality (AR/VR) and a college catalyst for the newly introduced ASU design aspiration, Practice Principled Innovation.

Dan is a Co-Chair of the W. P. Carey Inclusive Teaching Committee and partnered with ASU’s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy to launch a lunch and learn series in the spring 2021 semester.  Dan was the Campaign Chair in the W. P. Carey School for the 2022-2023 ASU United Way campaign and the Committee Chair in W. P. Carey for ASU Open Door 2023. Dan completed the 2020-2021 Leadership Academy Program at Arizona State University.

Dan presented at the AACSB Associate Deans Conferences in 2018, 2019, 2020,  2021, and 2022.  Dan co-organized a group that presented a keynote session for the 2022 AACSB Innovative Curriculum Conference.  He is a Co-Founder of the global Teaching and Learning Leaders Alliance and served on the Virtual Component Team for the 2020 Academy of Management Conference.

Before joining Arizona State University, Dan was the Associate Dean of Innovation and New Ventures, Director of the Carl H. Lindner Honors-PLUS program, and a Professor-Educator in the department of management at the Carl H. Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. Dan’s position focused on developing and implementing new innovations in pedagogy and curriculum design, technology and the overall Lindner student experience.

Dan utilized his cross-functional expertise to create new and innovative partnerships across disciplines within the Lindner College of Business, between Lindner and other UC colleges as well as with the Cincinnati business community. His wide-ranging portfolio of responsibility included instructional design, information technology, college relations / marketing communications, career services, strategy for the Lindner College online programs, and leading the Lindner Honors-PLUS undergraduate program.

Dan presented on the vision he was collaboratively enacting at the Lindner College at the AACSB Co-Lab conference focused on connecting business schools and practice. He was invited to participate in an article on the role of space for leadership and learning with the Global Chief Marketing Officer of Deloitte, which was published on Deloitte Insights.

At Cincinnati, Dan served on the Board of Directors of the Live Well Collaborative, the Business Advisory Council of Advancement & Transition Services, and the Undergraduate Honors Council. Dan was the Lindner College of Business ambassador to the 1819 Innovation Hub and chaired the Lindner College Teaching Excellence Committee. He was a member of the Lindner College of Business Executive Committee and the Dean’s Business Advisory Council (ex-officio).

Before joining the University of Cincinnati, Dan was a faculty member for eight years at both the Medill School of Journalism and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He partnered with several University departments to pilot and rollout an educational technology application for teaching and learning, which was supported by an initial grant from the Office of the Provost.

Dan co-created an Innovation in Teaching Series at Northwestern, which was held at The Garage, the University-wide space dedicated to innovation and entrepreneurship.  He has won teaching awards at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University as well as several grants for teaching innovation including the Procter and Gamble Higher Education Grant Fund.

Dan earned his BS in Business Administration from Washington University’s Olin School of Business and his MBA and Master of Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University’s School of Management and School of Industrial and Labor Relations. He earned his PhD from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Dan’s research on managing unexpected events and organizational resilience has been published in several peer-reviewed journals including Organization Science and Academy of Management Annals.
